NEW YORK — The Coast Guard Art Program (COGAP) is scheduled to show 36 works by 31 artists at the Salmagundi Club in Manhattan from July 1 through July 26, 2024.
The Salmagundi Club is located at 47 Fifth Avenue in New York. The event is free, open to the public, and can be seen Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. However, starting July 7, the Salmagundi Club will be closed on Sundays and Mondays.
These works showcase a myriad of missions performed by the U.S. Coast Guard. Subjects, to name but a few, include search and rescue, marine environmental protection, patrols and maintaining aids to navigation-all vital work and missions that make the Coast Guard Semper Paratus-Always Ready.
An additional 20 works from previous years are scheduled to be on display at the Salmagundi Club. Another eight artworks by deceased COGAP artists C.R. “Bob” Bryant and Dick Kramer will also be on exhibit. These, along with biographical materials, commemorate the artists’ lives.
Following the exhibition at the Salmagundi Club, the 36 works of the 2024 collection will be on view for two months at Federal Hall National Memorial in lower Manhattan. This display will begin July 31.
The Coast Guard Art Program makes use of fine art to educate diverse audiences about the Coast Guard. Today, more than ever, the service addresses an abundance of challenges as it works to maintain the nation’s security at home and abroad and execute its statutory missions such as defense readiness, ports, waterways and coastal security and illegal drug and migrant interdiction. COGAP art provides visual testimony to the unique contribution the service makes to the nation in its multifaceted roles as a military, humanitarian and law enforcement organization.
Art from the program is exhibited at museums around the country. It is also displayed in offices of members of Congress, Cabinet secretaries, senior government officials and other military services and Coast Guard locations nationwide.
Coast Guard artists—a talented cadre of professional artists—donate their work to the program. Today, the collection comprises over 2,200 works showing the missions performed often daily by the service’s active-duty military members.
This year marks the program’s 43rd anniversary. Since its inception, the Salmagundi Club, a New York City art and cultural center, has been its sponsor.
Federal Hall is located at 26 Wall Street, near the New York Stock Exchange. Exhibitions at both sites are free and open to the public.
